TRADITION AND MODERN PRACTICE
Nine routines, each with a different emphasis
Health Qigong brings movement, breathing and focused attention together in structured practice. The routines shown below draw on different traditions and movement ideas: some are compact and direct, while others use animal imagery, sound, dance-inspired actions or a short stick.
The descriptions are an introduction rather than teaching instructions. Learning with an appropriately experienced instructor helps practitioners understand posture, breathing, sequence and safe adaptation.
THE FORMS
Nine routines at a glance
Each image below shows its named routine. Select a form by its movement character, your interests and the teaching currently available to you.

Ba Duan Jin
Eight Pieces of Brocade
A compact sequence of eight movements combining upright postures, gentle stretching and coordinated breathing. Its clear structure makes it one of the most widely recognised introductions to Health Qigong.

Liu Zi Jue
Six Sounds
A breathing-led routine in which six softly articulated sounds are coordinated with simple, flowing movements. Attention is placed on relaxed exhalation, posture and an unhurried rhythm.

Yi Jin Jing
Muscle and Tendon Transformation
A twelve-movement routine characterised by stretching, turning and controlled extension. The movements alternate between relaxation and gentle strength while maintaining steady breathing.

Wu Qin Xi
Five Animals
Inspired by the qualities of the tiger, deer, bear, monkey and bird. Each animal introduces a different character of movement, creating a varied and expressive practice.

Ma Wang Dui
Mawangdui Daoyin
Developed from the ancient Daoyin illustrations discovered at Mawangdui. The sequence uses opening, closing, bending and turning actions performed with coordinated attention and breathing.

Daoyin Yangsheng Gong 12 Steps
Twelve-step Daoyin routine
A twelve-part practice bringing together body movement, breathing and mental focus. Its measured transitions reward careful learning and regular, patient practice.

Shi Er Duan Jin
Twelve Pieces of Brocade
A twelve-section Brocade routine using controlled stretching, opening and closing movements. The sequence is practised calmly, with attention to alignment and comfortable range.

Tai Ji Yang Sheng Zhang
Health-preserving Taiji stick
A distinctive routine performed with a short stick. Circular pathways, coordinated steps and changes of direction make the equipment an integral part of the movement.

Da Wu
The Great Dance
A graceful, dance-inspired form using rising, sinking, opening and closing actions. Movement, breathing and attention are coordinated to create a smooth and expressive sequence.
Learn the foundations
Begin with clear guidance on stance, alignment, breathing and the order of movements.
Use a comfortable range
Movements should be adapted to the practitioner’s current mobility and experience.
Practise consistently
Familiarity develops through regular, unhurried repetition rather than forcing the movements.
