Chinese Culture Takes Centre Stage in Britain’s Historic City

COLCHESTER, UK — On Saturday, 18 July 2026, Colchester—Britain’s oldest city—welcomed the return of its annual Colchester Carnival. More than 50 community organisations, cultural institutions and charitable groups from Colchester and across the United Kingdom came together for this joyful and vibrant multicultural celebration.

At midday, thousands of residents and visitors gathered in Colchester city centre to enjoy the grand carnival parade. Performers representing different countries and ethnic communities showcased the inclusiveness and diversity of British society through dance, music, traditional costumes, sporting demonstrations and distinctive cultural performances.

In the afternoon, the celebrations continued at the renowned Lower Castle Park, where visitors enjoyed a colourful programme of stage performances, interactive sports activities, international food, community exhibitions and family entertainment. The lively atmosphere, filled with laughter and celebration, brought an added sense of festivity to the historic city.

Chinese Procession Becomes a Highlight of the Parade

One of the most eye-catching features of this year’s carnival was the Chinese procession, jointly organised by the Colchester Chinese Culture Society, the UK–China Outdoor Sports Promotion Association, Health Qigong Federation UK, the London Red Peony Chinese Arts Troupe and the Cambridge Chinese Community Centre.

The Chinese delegation presented a carefully arranged programme featuring the traditional ethnic dance Munao Zongge, Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan, Health Qigong Ba Duan Jin and a traditional Chinese dragon dance. Together, these performances demonstrated the distinctive appeal of traditional Chinese culture while reflecting the positive and energetic spirit of the contemporary Chinese community in Britain.

Accompanied by lively music and enthusiastic applause, the Chinese dragon twisted, leapt and soared through the parade; the ethnic dancers performed with passion and energy; and the Health Qigong practitioners displayed graceful, flowing movements combining strength and softness.

The performances attracted large crowds along the parade route. Many spectators stopped to watch, raised their phones to take photographs and videos, and interacted enthusiastically with the performers. The Chinese procession received warm applause and widespread praise, becoming one of the highlights of this year’s carnival.

Promoting Cultural Exchange and Celebrating the Chinese Community

The Chinese team brought together cultural organisations and volunteers from several cities across the United Kingdom, jointly presenting a vibrant celebration of Chinese culture for the local community.

Ms Xue Qionghong, Chair of the Colchester Chinese Culture Society, served as the Chief Coordinator of the Chinese delegation. Together with Mr Herman Wang, Chairman of Health Qigong Federation UK; Ms Wei Qiong, Director of the London Red Peony Chinese Arts Troupe; and Ms Chen Bingrong of the Cambridge Chinese Community Centre, she led the team in both the parade and the stage performances.

The organisers also took part personally in performances of Munao Zongge, Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan, Health Qigong Ba Duan Jin and the Chinese dragon dance, presenting the audience with a memorable showcase of Chinese culture.

The event not only highlighted the richness of traditional Chinese culture, but also deepened understanding of Chinese culture among the wider British public. It promoted friendship and communication between different ethnic communities and demonstrated the important contribution made by the Chinese community in integrating into local society and advancing cultural exchange and cooperation between China and the United Kingdom.

The successful participation of the Chinese delegation in the 2026 Colchester Carnival was made possible by the combined efforts of numerous organisations and volunteers. Sincere thanks are extended to everyone who helped organise and support the event.
